Upshur M. Spencer, MD

Dr. Upshur Spencer is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon who specializes in treating injuries and conditions of the back, neck and spine.

Dr. Spencer attended medical school at Georgetown University and completed his residency at Harvard. He joined Anchorage Fracture & Orthopedic Clinic in 2003, after completing back-to-back fellowships in trauma and spine surgery.

Dr. Spencer’s first fellowship was six months of additional training in orthopedic trauma at Brigham & Woman’s Hospital at Harvard. There he recognized a strong interest in spinal deformities. His second fellowship was one year of intensive study of the spine at Washington University in St. Louis.

Dr. Spencer enjoys helping kids with severe deformities and seeing them stand straighter after surgery. His spine fellowship gave him the opportunity to learn additional techniques to manage pediatric scoliosis and master adult spine problems caused by degeneration and trauma.

Dr. Spencer grew up skiing and playing hockey in Rochester, New York. When he saw the notice that Anchorage Fracture & Orthopedic Clinic was looking for a spine surgeon, he jumped at the chance. He enjoys fishing and gardening. Dr. Spencer is married to Jennifer.

Testimonials for Dr. Spencer

“Everyone from walking in with our 3-year-old grandson to being taken back to the physician was awesome. We had arrived early because we weren’t sure how the roads were going to be. They were able to get us in and out before our appointment was even scheduled. Now that’s customer service. Doctor Spencer was very professional and went over what he would recommend.”

- Shannon G.

“Doctor was polite. Gave us plenty of information, answered our questions and had very good bedside manners.”

- Travis M.

“He was top-notch all the way, including his visits to my room, before and after surgery. He and his office staff treated me very well, when it came to the follow-up visits. In fact, of all the doctors that treated me during this unfortunate experience, I was most impressed with him and his caring, I’ve-got-time-for-you persona.”

- Richard S.

“Helpful, calming, honest and thorough.”

- Ruthann A.

“He was very helpful and compassionate, and listened to what I was experiencing and what I thought was happening since I experienced similar symptoms resulting in surgery. He helped me in any way he could to deal with insurance companies, FMLA, surgery issues, etc. His office was truly helpful and worked with me to get me back on my feet as quickly as possible.”

- Cristanne S.

“I enjoyed how everyone worked together as a team.”

- Steven H.

“Dr. Spencer is an outstanding doctor with a calm, professional demeanor. We are thankful we contacted him for a second opinion. His thoroughness and follow-through guided us to a diagnosis that we feel entirely confident. Thank you, Dr. Spencer!”

“Dr. Spencer answered all of my questions and provided me with the option of using Meloxicam which has worked like a charm. I really appreciate non-surgical options for my back problem. Also, he relieved my stress about complications I was afraid I might suffer as a result of my scoliosis.”

- Joanna B.

“Great doctor. Direct and informative. Had all questions answered prior and post surgery. Great job and thanks. I never knew an elbow was so important getting in and out of bed.”

- James C.
