Austin Hummel, PA-C

Austin Hummel is a certified physician assistant specializing in knee, hand and elbow orthopedics. He works closely with Dr. Brad Sparks.

An Anchorage native, Austin brings experience in family medicine and upper-extremity orthopedics to his work with patients. After completing physician assistant school, Austin spent several years practicing family medicine in Washington. He cared for patients with a wide range of medical needs, including underserved and homeless populations. That experience shaped his adaptable, whole-person approach to care and taught him the importance of meeting each patient where they are.

Austin later spent two years in Utah working closely with a hand and elbow surgeon. Through this role, he developed a strong appreciation for the complexity of the upper extremity and the significant effect that even a small injury can have on a patient’s daily life. His perspective is also informed by his own hand injuries sustained while rock climbing.

Austin was drawn to orthopedics because of the direct impact it can have on mobility and quality of life. He finds it rewarding to help patients recover from injuries, regain function after surgery and return to the activities they enjoy. Having grown up in Alaska, he understands how closely an active lifestyle and time outdoors are connected to many patients’ well-being.

Outside of work, Austin enjoys trail running, skiing and rock climbing, especially in Alaska’s backcountry.
