Dr. Christian McCartney, spine surgeon in Alaska

Dr. Christian McCartney is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon, and a native of Texas. His specific interests include minimally invasive spine surgery, robotic spine surgery and motion-preserving spine surgery.

Dr. McCartney felt called to become a physician from a young age. His youngest brother, Matthew, was born prematurely with cerebral palsy. Dr. McCartney went to many of his brother’s medical appointments over the years and gained a valuable perspective as a family member of a complex patient. Dr. McCartney then had the opportunity to shadow an orthopedic surgeon in high school, and he never looked back.

Dr. McCartney graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in Oklahoma City. He later completed a spine surgery fellowship at Spine Institute of Arizona in Scottsdale. (Fellowship training is the highest level of specialty training for physicians.)

Dr. McCartney is a proud member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

As a spine surgeon, Dr. McCartney believes his job is not only to diagnose and treat disorders of the spine but also to educate patients on the nature of their condition and all their treatment options. He hopes to establish a relationship with each of his patients, learn about all of their symptoms, understand their goals, and provide individualized treatment plans. Whether the best treatment is operative or non-operative, Dr. McCartney works tirelessly to get his patients back to doing the things they love.

When he’s not helping patients, Dr. McCartney loves to be outside, especially with his wife and son. They enjoy hiking, skiing, hunting and fishing as a family. Dr. McCartney and his family are excited to live in Alaska, where these activities are right outside the front door.

Dr. McCartney took the time to get my MRI from the diagnostic imaging provider (after they told me they had sent my file to AFOC). He showed me where in the lumbar section of my spine stenosis is present. He did not push me to have surgery. Rather, he recommended I move forward with the RFA on the 27th and see if that helps. I set up a follow-up consult with him for the 6th of August.

This is something I should have done a long time ago, but that is the thing about surgeries. You get them and then you do not see the surgeon once things are done — usually. But I was reminded to do this after clearing out my emails. Dr. McCartney was an amazing person to have on my care team. I had never had surgery before, and even when I changed my mind and said let’s do the surgery, he made sure I was fully informed of my choices and I did not feel forced to choose the surgery. A year post-surgery, I do not have the back pain I did at first. Any issues I feel in my back are due to my lack of being responsible, not the failure of the surgery. I am so appreciative of the care Dr. M provided. You rock!!

Listened and explained carefully and thoroughly all my options. Reviewed my charts, educated me on my spine issues well beyond my first surgeon’s interview. Couldn’t have had a better expert for a second opinion. I would wholeheartedly recommend Dr. McCartney and staff at AFOC.
